Headspace GC-MS

Headspace GC-MS (HS/GC-MS) is used for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in solid and liquid samples, such as residual solvents and hydrocarbons.

A typical experiment consists of heating a sample containing a solvent in a headspace vial and analysing the compounds in the headspace by GC-MS. SGS M-Scan’s new TurboMatrix 40 Trap Headspace Sampler coupled to a Perkin Elmer Clarus 500 GC-MS has the capability to heat samples to 210oC. This provides optimised reproducibility and maximised extraction of volatile compounds from the headspace offering improved detection limits. Typical detection limits are in the parts per million (ppm) range.

Headspace GC-MS is used for the following applications:

SGS M-Scan also offers TD GC-MS, another high sensitivity technique for the analysis of VOCs and residual solvents.
