SGS M-Scan has developed particular expertise in the specific analysis of produced waters and aqueous discharges. Volatiles (particularly benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes ((BTEX), low boiling saturates and solvents) are concentrated onto Tenax porous polymer for subsequent analysis by Thermal Desorption GC-MS.

Volatile fatty acids (particularly acetic, propionic, butyric) are determined by direct GC analysis.

Fractions comprising organic acids (phenols, higher carboxylic acids), organic bases (heterocyclic amines) and neutrals are prepared for detailed analysis by GC-MS as specified by USEPA and CONCAWE. Total hydrocarbon concentrations may be determined by UVF or GC-FID.

Selected production chemicals can be determined by a combination of GC-MS, MALDI-TOF, Electrospray or APCI-MS. Acidic and basic fractions are separated as appropriate. The resulting analytical data are interpreted in full and also inspected for the presence of particular target compounds.
