SGS M-Scan offers an extensive range of techniques for hydrocarbon analysis in the marine environment. These include monitoring baseline hydrocarbon levels pre drilling, post drilling or abandonment surveys of cutting piles and oil fingerprinting to determine the source of product found around onshore, inshore and offshore oil installations.

 

Typical analyses performed by SGS M-Scan include:

  • UVF screening to determine Total Hydrocarbon content to ppb levels

  • GC-MS for the identification and quantification of aromatic compounds (PAHs)

  • GC-FID for the identification and quantification of aliphatic compounds and base oil content

  • Purge and trap GC-MS for the identification and quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including BTEX

  • GC-MS for oil fingerprinting to determine the source of accidental or deliberate discharge

 

Working with selected, specialist sub contractors SGS M-Scan can also offer:

  • Total Organic Carbon by TOC

  • Metals by ICP-OES and ICP-MS

  • Particle size distribution of sediments by sieving and sedimentation or laser diffraction

  • Analysis of suspended solids

  • pH

  • Analysis of anions typically nitrates, phosphates, carbonates/bicarbonates

  • Phenol, nitrogen and dissolved oxygen content

  • Basic Oxygen Demand/ Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD, COD)

  • Organic content by Loss on Ignition

  • Radioactive metal content including Lead and Cesium

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of benthic microfauna

SGS M-Scan can provide fully interpretative reports of all the data obtained from the analysis of seawater and sediment samples as well as offer a Consultancy Service whereby chromatography and mass spectrometry data obtained by third parties can be reviewed and an Expert Opinion on the source of the product provided.
